🇺🇦 Is It Safe to Visit Lviv?

Yes, it is!
Lviv, located in western Ukraine, is considered one of the safest regions in the country. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, thousands of foreigners have continued to visit Lviv — including journalists, volunteers, diplomats, and representatives of international NGOs.

🔒 General Safety

Lviv remains a relatively calm and well-organized city. Despite the ongoing war, the risks posed by russian missile or drone strikes are low. In fact, it’s common to see people walking around the city even late at night without any safety concerns.

However, during martial law, a curfew is in effect from 12:00 am to 5:00 am. Being outside during this time without special permission is not allowed.

Important note: Filming or photographing military checkpoints, administrative buildings, hospitals, or other strategic locations is strictly prohibited or allowed only with special permits.

📊 Let’s Talk Numbers

Since February 2022, there have been only 12 civilian deaths caused by russian missile or drone strikes within the city of Lviv (source).
According to the 2017 census, Lviv had a population of 721,301, though current estimates suggest it has surpassed 1 million. Still, to be conservative and accurate, we use the official number.

👉 This results in a death rate of 1.66 per 100,000 people over a two-year period.

🔫 How Does This Compare to U.S. Cities?

Let’s compare this with gun violence death rates in U.S. cities (2020 data, pre-COVID spike), based on The Big Cities Health Inventory Data Platform:

CityGun Deaths per 100,000
New York City3.76
Los Angeles8.34
Houston22.05
Columbus18.96
Indianapolis30.91
Charlotte14.98
San Francisco4.99
Seattle6.83
Denver14.37
Washington DC20.57
Oklahoma City17.88
El Paso9.64
Boston5.47

As you can see, Lviv is statistically safer than many major U.S. cities in terms of fatal incidents.

Moreover, missile threats in Ukraine are not randomair alerts always sound in advance, giving people plenty of time to reach shelter. In contrast, gun violence in the U.S. is often unpredictable.
